| Book Description: |
We are hearing more and more that traditional voice technology is falling by the wayside and being replaced by bigger, better, and cheaper technologies. Voice and data networks, once separate entities, are now merging into a single network, as computers can now double as telephones. IP is increasingly combined with conventional telecommunications to form a new hybrid: IP telephony. Techniques, protocols, and products for carrying voice over IP networks have evolved so dramatically recently that IP telephony is now being widely implemented by business and public carriers alike. This rapidly evolving voice solution is one of the most frequently discussed areas of telecommunications. This course covers challenges of routing voice calls over the Internet, discussing trends in VoIP, quality of service (QoS) issues, the future of VoIP, and VoIP’s implications on traditional methods of telecommunications. In addition, we’ll cover the VoIP market, provide an overview of the technology, and discuss the engineering issues involved. We conclude by considering the key industry players and their impact on the marketplace. |
